Gareth Barry says that Everton should be higher in the table
Gareth Barry says that Everton should be higher in the table for the quality of players that they possess in the squad.
The experienced midfielder has been one of the ever present name in the Everton team this season. He is also joined with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley, and John Stones. These are quality players who have performed well on an individual basis. However, Everton have been let down by poor team coordination throughout the campaign. It sees the club struggling to even get into the top of the table let alone finish in the European qualification places.
Everton appeared to make a lot of progress during the initial years of Roberto Martinez, as they were bringing in quality names like Romelu Lukaku for big transfer money. However, the initial surge appears to have left the club in recent times and they can only salvage the campaign by winning the FA Cup. After reaching the semifinals of the FA Cup, where they will face Manchester United, Everton are in serious need of a trophy to show as a sign of progress to some of the top names of the club. Lukaku has already hinted that he may start looking elsewhere if the club do not qualify for Europe.
Barry wants the team to show more consistency going forward."When you look at our league position, with the players we've got, we need to be higher. You can't argue about that. There is a lot of negativity around at the moment. We don't want to finish another season in the bottom half of the table. We need to make sure we start playing better together as a team," said Barry. The defensive midfielder has featured in 36 games this season and has provided just one assist without any goals.
