Roberto Martinez assures return of Barry soon

Everton manager Roberto Martinez says that midfielder Gareth Barry is unlikely to miss several months of action.

The former Manchester City midfielder, who signed for the club on a permanent basis in the summer, had to be taken off within the first 20 minutes during the recent 1-1 draw against Sunderland. It was heavily speculated that Barry faced several months on the sidelines because of a broken leg. Martinez has given a major boost to Everton fans by saying that Barry is only going to miss the next few weeks of action.

The 33-year-old may not be enjoying the same sparkling form that resulted in Everton finishing fifth in the table last season. However, he is a vital component in the Everton team nonetheless. Everton have been struggling for consistency in the league.

This has been attributed to the exploits in the Europa league, which was a distraction that they did not have last season. The toffees have done well in the group stages of the Europa league, but it has come at a price. They are 10th in the table after having won only three out of the 11 league matches. The form of striker Romelu Lukaku, who became the club’s record signing at £ 28 million, is also a concern for Martinez.

"Gareth Barry is continuing to be assessed after being carried off on a stretcher at Sunderland on Sunday. The Blues midfielder was taken straight to hospital in the north east where subsequent x-rays thankfully showed that there was no break. His ankle is still very swollen, which complicates assessment, but the Everton medical staff have confirmed that there is ligament damage in the area. The player's treatment at Finch Farm is ongoing and although it is too early to estimate a length of absence, it is hopeful the time out will be weeks rather than months," said Martinez.
